Meeting Date and Day: Sunday, Oct 13 2019

Meeting Time: Meet 12 noon; estimated hike duration 3 to 3.5 hours

Departure Time:  12:15 PM

Meeting Place: Intersection of Diamond and Bosworth, in front of the Glen Park Bart station.

Rating: Level-3

Mileage: six miles

Elevation Gain: 1,500 ft.

Description: First, we climb up Glen Canyon on the rustic Islais Creek Trail, where indigenous fall asters should be in bloom. Highlight of the second hike segment is the newly inaugurated Steep Ravine Trail behind Laguna Honda Hospital. This moist, lush canyon was bursting with nasturtium, scotch broom, and other “exotic” blooms even in late September; enjoying these non-indigenous late season bloomers will be our little guilty pleasure. Before the third/last segment, we’ll make a restroom stop at the Forest Hill Muni station. Then, we’ll trot up and down (mostly up) the famous staircases of Forest Hill and aptly-named Grandview Heights, ending up at the N-Judah streetcar near 15th Avenue in the Inner Sunset.

Bring/Wear: Terrain includes rustic trails, city sidewalks, and lots of stairs; sturdy hiking shoes are advised. Bring layers to accommodate warm canyons as well as windy exposed hilltops. Bring snacks or sandwich, and adequate water.

Rain Policy: Other Light or heavy rain will cancel

Other comments: Pace will be “sustained leisurely”, aka “ relaxed moderate”. Step-by-step directions for all segments of the 17-mile Crosstown Trail are available on the “outerspatial” phone app.
